Right the Wight Wrong

The cost of ferries to the Island has long been the subject of discussion. I presume the companies providing a ferry service have to make a profit but their prices are coming under some fairly severe scrutiny. The Island’s MP, Andrew Turner is doing something about it (from his recent email): “I have received many [...]

Microsoftens..

The Register, among many others, is reporting that Microsoft are extending support on Windows XP. My recent experiences with Vista (on other people’s machines!) have been less than pleasant so I suspect they, MS, may be treading water until they release a pack of fixes for at least the most obvious problems: Boot speed, even [...]

It appears to be fixed…

After days of blog problems, it seems that everything is now back to normal. No admission of any guilt from Fasthosts, but as I have changed nothing, I can only assume they have modified a little something somewhere and have chosen not to admit it. Whatever; I’m pleased to have things back to normal! It’s [...]

My Curd DNA Test

I now have the results from my DNA test. It turns out I am part of Haplogroup R1b1 (which means little to me yet!) but here is the description from Wikipedi which doesn’t tell me a lot except that I seem to be in the most common male group in Europe. Markers 1-12 Locus 1 [...]

Shades of grey

I’d like to offer my congratulations to the person who chose the team colours for the World Cup, Scotland and NZ match this afternoon. If he sends me his address, I’ll send him a new white stick! OK, so it wasn’t a great game anyway but it was completely spoiled by both teams playing in [...]

Isle of Wight Star Party

The Vectis Astronomical Society, in association with SAGAS, is holding a Star Party here on the Isle of Wight between 6th – 10th MARCH 2008. A new website has been set up at http://www.iowstarparty.org/ and will contain more details as they become available

Still got problems

Fasthosts are taking forever to sort out their network problems and that is playing hell with this blog. In the meantime I have removed most of the externally generated content (as they suggested) to see if it makes and difference. At the moment it seems that a couple of things in the right hand column [...]

Cellphone projector

Engadget has an article about the development of a cellphone sized projector. I had been told a back in January that this was being worked on (thanks Mike) but this is the first “public outing” I’ve seen.

Where did it go?

This blog is down at the moment was down for the past couple of days due to some nonsense at Fasthosts! They reckon that changes made on their network mean any site accessing external content on Port 80 is scuppered… Shame they can’t undo the changes they made eh? Still I suppose it only happened [...]

What Katy Did!

My previous heads up about my niece, Katy Curd, and her downhill mountain biking deserves another mention. In the recent WORLD Championships, held at Fort William last weekend, she managed a fantastic silver medal in only her second “full on” event. There are loads of links to her success – just search for “Katy Curd” [...]
