Microsoftens..
The Register, among many others, is reporting that Microsoft are extending support on Windows XP.
My recent experiences with Vista (on other people’s machines!) have been less than pleasant so I suspect they, MS, may be treading water until they release a pack of fixes for at least the most obvious problems:
- Boot speed, even with a couple of gigs of RAM
- No official Speedtouch drivers – it’s the most common ADSL modem
- Hidden processes nicking all the processor time
- Painfully slow compact flash reading through a card reader
- Constant software error reports and attempts to provide fixes
I know XP went through a similar loop a few years ago, but since then it has become a stable product which could and should have been built upon. Instead, it seems MS have built new; moving everything around just for the sake of it and providing lots of glossy graphics in the vain attempt that the world will fall for it – well wake up boys, they didn’t!
Perhaps, at last, we have signal from the “man on the bus”, he has finally had enough, stopped buying, and is now ready to revisit quality – I hope so, I’m fed up with trying to fix things that just can’t be mended.
This post was brought to you running XP via Parallels and OSX on a MacBook Pro!

I’m writing this on my desktop PC that is running Vista. It’s got 4GB of RAM which didn’t give any advantage over 2GB as I’m running the 32 bit version that can’t see more than 3 and a bit. 64bit isn’t an option as it won’t accept any driver that hasn’t been blessed by Microsoft (so I gather).
Vista is okay and I think I’ll be sticking with it. Ubuntu can’t do three screens neatly and I got sick of playing around with it, combined with the messing about needed to run Photoshop and my accountancy package. OS X on non-Mac hardware is possible but again I’m concerned that I’ll have driver issues. I’ve thought about going back to XP but I’m going to stick with Vista for the time being.
At the moment everything that I’ve got works so I’m backing it up and not planning to change!!!
