WordPress User Registration
Over the past few days I have seen about 20 “people” try to register with this blog – I’m not really sure why. “They” all seem to come from Poland, which in itself isn’t a problem, but I don’t know anyone Polish I don’t think!
A little further investigation reveals that there seems to be no method, other than banning all user registrations, to stop it happening so that’s what I’ve done. I suspect it’ll make little or no difference to the normal operation of the blog as there is no need to register to read it anyway!
If you hadn’t already guessed, the terms “people” and “They” in this case refer to a spammer using software to automatically and falsely register users on the site with the hope of destroying it by some means in the future.
Hopefully the total ban on user registrations will stop the problem, but I look forward to the good folks at WordPress coming up with a more elegant solution. Meantime if you see anything strange happening, please let me know via the usual email route.

Hi Brian – We have the same problem on VB, so far hasn’t affected the site, we normally delete them every so often.
Registering to the site can be a good way of collecting email addresses for future mailout – not that we’ve ever tried it.

I was doing the same before this last attack, yesterday I got 4 or 5 registrations within a minute and all from the same domain in Poland (unless of course it was spoofed!).
The only slight concern I really have is that WP security is like a door with multiple locks, allowing user registration opens one of the locks and potentially makes the door just that bit easier to open should more keys become available at some later date.
Anyhow, I think I’ll leave registration off for now and see if anything else happens – I can still monitor what’s going on via the log files.

Hi Brian. I found your blog when googling for “wordpress user registration”, actually looking for a plugin that enables customization of the info that is taken from user during registration. For instance, I want user to enter few more things about himself during registration. Are you aware of any such plugins? Thanks!
Sorry, I’ve not seen anything like that. Plenty of registration page “theme” editors but not additional field stuff.
