Backup now – it’s getting warmer?

I’ve had a batch of calls this week from people who can’t get their PCs started.

It seems the last few days of warmer weather are causing a few problems. Of course it may be a coincidence but I can’t remember 4 hard drives failing in as many days. My suspicion is that the relatively sudden change in ambient temperature is taking it’s toll on these machines. Anyhow, luckily I have been able to recover the data fully on three of the PCs and most of it on the fourth (just the email has eluded me as it is stored in the area affected by the failure).

Now on to the important bit; none of these people had taken backups of their data and they should feel very lucky that the drive failure hasn’t caused more problems. Backup is easy and cheap these days; software for all the main operating systems is available, often free of charge, from the web and there has never been a better or cheaper time to buy a large, external, removable, USB drive.

Backup is boring and tedious but if you want to save your sanity you really should set up your system to make it easy – go on, do it now!
