Double click the first track shown to get things going and the system does the rest, playing all the others in sequence. It couldn’t be easier!

I even saw that there’s some “White Noise” in there…

I had been looking forward to the “Classic Legends of Rock” gig at Ventnor’s Winter Garden since my earlier post – last night, I wasn’t disappointed. For anyone who couldn’t make it, you missed a great night!

The first on stage were the Groundhogs who, I have to admit, are an aquired taste but they paved the way into Wishbone Ash’s set really well playing a large chunk of their early 70s album “Split”. Sound quality wasn’t great but it did the job for me….

Next on were Wishbone Ash. They played a blinder… they really seemed to enjoy themselves and played plenty of tracks from the older stuff I love so much. The newcomers to the band blended in to the point that I didn’t really notice that they weren’t part of the original lineup.

Finally we were treated to Focus who played a few of their early numbers and some of their newer stuff. Personally I would have preferred them to have the second slot and for Wishbone Ash to have closed the gig as I think things perhaps peaked a little early… nonetheless Thijs van Leer (the only remaining member of the original lineup) and the replacement for Jan Akkerman (lead guitar) treated us to accurate and rocking renditions of Focus’s “greatest hits”.

Thanks for the tickets Tyler!

As usual Bill was on good form and the evening was a good one despite the acoustics in the RAH. Strangely, although we could hear everything the orchestra played very clearly, Bill’s voice was often lost. The guys on the mixing desk did their best I am sure but that building is just not very good for a single voice.

Unfortunately this is the second time I have been disappointed at a “single voice” performance there, the fist was a Tracy Chapman concert some years ago.

Well done Bill for taking on such a project, we did miss the big screens though!

The Ventnor Winter Garden has recently had quite a few decent gigs but this time, at least for me, it has played a blinder!

On October 31st 2008 they have a triple bill “Classic Legends of Rock” concert featuring:

The Groundhogs

Wishbone Ash

Focus

For somebody who’s tastes are firmly seated in the 70s this should be a real treat. I’ve seen Wishbone Ash a couple of times before and Focus once. Split (Groundhogs) was the first album I ever bought so I’m really looking forward to the 31st.

As a bit of an early Christmas present, we decided to get one of these little things to connect the hifi system to all the music I have stored on a central PC.

It’s not easy to appreciate just how small this thing is from the photo – it’s about a foot or so long and is about 2 inches in diameter.

It arrived, as promised, the day after Sue ordered it and I set about installing the software etc. Well, now it’s all working and I have to wonder why I never bought one before, they’re brilliant!

I had a few small problems during the installation but most of that boiled down to my own impatience and not allowing the server enough time to fully digest all the songs before trying to access them – also, the software provided was not the latest and almost immediately after I got the wireless connection working, it automatically flagged that an upgrade was available and promptly went and got it, completed the install routine, and rebooted itself.

All in all, this is a must have gadget if you have an MP3 collection and want to make full use of it – you can read more here, and even buy one. You’d better be quick though, at just £43.47 and a stack of great customer reviews, they’re selling fast.

Now I must get around to fully tagging and cleaning up all the files I have… boring.. but now at least I have a decent reason

Oh! I almost forgot to mention. This thing streams a few thousand internet radio stations around the house as well!

It seems that EMI now understand what music downloaders really want.
I have just been listening to a webcast by Eric Nicoli, CEO EMI Group and Steve Jobs CEO Apple. The main announcement involved DRM or Digital Rights Management and the promise to offer a new option for music downloads.
DRM has been the bane of many user’s lives. They have been able to legally pay for and download tracks and albums from many sources, unfortunately, until today, they have been restricted by DRM as to which devices they can play this music on.
The announcement today gives users the choice:

Download low price tracks, with lower quality and DRM or

Download premium price tracks, with higher quality and NO DRM

Interestingly there is another twist; only individual tracks attract the premium pricing model, downloaded complete albums will be sold at the same price as before but will be higher quality and without DRM.
So there you have it, a day to be remembered, 2 April 2007, the day the music industry finally opened its eyes to the real world. EMI Press Release
