Apple Cor!

I’ve been doing some work that involves using one of the new Macs. The one I have on loan is a MacBook Pro with a nice big screen (for a laptop) and I have to admit that I’m growing very fond of it. Fanless, silent computing is a joy! Way back in 1988 I had [...]

Genealogy and DNA

The FamilyTreeDNA website is a centre for those wanting to make real and proven links with others who share the same male line name. This is a particularly important area of genealogy as nobody can be really sure that documentary evidence is 100% correct – transcription errors and lies on certificates being just two areas [...]

Safari…. so goodi!

So far, Safari appears very stable for a Beta release and I am using it quite hard. It hasn’t wobbled with anything I’ve thrown at it and the only page I’ve found that it won’t read is a Census image on ancestry.co.uk – hardly surprising as Ancestry actually state that they only support IE, Firefox [...]

Safari Beta

There is a Safari beta for windows at http://www.apple.com/safari/. I’ve just downloaded it and will be giving it a try over the next few days. For those who don’t know, Safari is Apple’s web browser software. Quick update: All installed without any problems and in fact this edit was done with it – I should [...]

Word 2007 problems

Eastman’s Genealogy Newsletter is reporting problems with documents produced using Word 2007: “ If you write articles for magazines, you should be aware of some new restrictions. Two of the nation’s most prestigious magazines have advised authors that they cannot accept articles written in Microsoft Word 2007, and I expect that more magazines will follow [...]

Mouse in the house!

I recently reported a problem with my mouse; well the replacement Logitech MX1000 Laser arrived yesterday and spent the day being fully charged. Now that it’s up and running, it’s hard to believe that I had continued to use the old one! It really is strange how we don’t notice the slow degradation in performance [...]

Ancestry Aid

Stumbled upon the Ancestry Aid genealogy website today. It’s free to register and although I didn’t find anything of immediate interest, it does look very promising. Another potentially useful list of search sites also came to light here.

Google Page Rank Explained

Smashing Magazine explains the inner workings of Google Page Rank. It’s a fairly long read but well worth the effort.

Can you see what it is yet?

Soon, we’ll all be sick of the sight of this: I’ve taken a couple of give-away bits off it but don’t search for it, take a guess…..If you’re still stuck take a look here.

Great Service

A few years ago I bought a cordless mouse from Logitech – today it’s listed at almost £50 and, if I remember correctly, it cost me almost £70! Unfortunately, after almost 3 years of daily use, it has developed a very annoying fault, it registers double clicks when only one is made. This is very [...]
