Geograph

Have you heard about the Geograph British Isles project? it’s a great site which set out to accumulate photos from every square kilometre of Great Britain and Ireland - buildings, landscapes etc.
So far, about 70% of the squares are complete with at least 1 picture with the remaining blanks in some pretty wild places [...]

2009 - International Year of Astronomy

Next year is the International Year of Astronomy and the Vectis Astronomical Society are intending to join the rest of the astronomy world by holding events throughout 2009.
As well as pavement astronomy, we are hoping to join together with other interest groups around the Island and provide talks and general sky watching.
Planning is at a [...]

August Sky Highlights

August is a good month for taking a look at the sky above you. There are three easily viewable events this year.
Please remember though, NEVER look directly at the Sun. Direct observation either with or without optical aid is to be avoided unless correct filters are used. Instead project the Sun’s image through a pair [...]

Looking forward to October!

The Ventnor Winter Garden has recently had quite a few decent gigs but this time, at least for me, it has played a blinder!

On October 31st 2008 they have a triple bill “Classic Legends of Rock” concert featuring:

The Groundhogs
Wishbone Ash
Focus

For somebody who’s tastes are firmly seated in the 70s this should be a real treat. [...]

Test post using the MacBook

When I last tried posting to WordPress from this MacBook, everything appeared as one long sentence and I had to drop the WYSIWYG interface and edit the HTML source for the post in order to make the thing readable. Hardly the best way to blog. The spec for v2.5.1 suggestes that the problem has been [...]

Le Tomtom

I had to go over to St Lawrence at the weekend and duly entered the address details into my (previously!) trusted Tomtom GPS only to be warned that I may be driving to an area where they drive on the right!
Unless there is something I don’t know about the Southern part of the Island, the [...]

News Update…

I haven’t added to the site for a while so I thought I’d better do an update…
The garden house is now completed, I just need to connect the electricity up. That of course means finishing the rewire in the garage and pulling a shiny new armoured cable the length of the garden. Fortunately there is [...]

Garden House

The next phase of the garden work is well underway:

In fact the roofing felt is going on at the moment and the windows/doors are being fitted. Should all be done by the end of the week including carcass wiring etc.
Looking good though…..

Don’t miss the eclipse!

(Public domain image by Thomas Knoblauch)
Just in case you didn’t know; early tomorrow morning (21/02/2008), between about 1.45 and 5am, there will be a total lunar eclipse (similar to the one shown above!). Totality will be at around 3.30am.
If you do miss it, there won’t be another until December 21, 2010.

Wight Astronomy

I have been trying to update details for the Vectis Astronomical Society (VAS) on the BBC website for some time now but they can’t be bothered to do it!
This has caused some confusion for those trying to book tickets etc for the upcoming Star Party here on the Island.
This posting is made in the hope [...]
